Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a unique object in the world, which should be on the list of must-see tourist attractions around Krakow.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine, one of the oldest rock salt mines in the world, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During its nearly 700-year history, some 245 kilometers of passages have been excavated here. The Tourist Route open to visitors is 3.5 kilometers long.

This remarkable mine complex is extremely popular throughout Poland as well as attracting millions of tourists from all over the world. Salt lakes, salt sculptures, underground chambers, St. Kinga's Chapel, original pits, ancient mining tools and machinery - at every step visitors will find interesting exhibits. And all this underground, at a depth of 64-135 meters.

Wieliczka Salt Mine is the second (next to Bochnia) mine in the world operating from the Middle Ages to the present day.

When you have finished visiting the Tourist Route, it is also worthwhile to go to the Route Cracow Saltworks Museum Wieliczka with the famous Polish kierat, which is probably the largest wooden mining machine in the world, as well as see a luxury railroad for officials, Matejko paintings, miners' everyday objects and much more.
